Spearmint

Botanical illustration of spearmint (Mentha spicata) with pointed leaves and lilac flower spikes

Spearmint is the sweet, gentle mint of the British garden. Its name comes from the pointed, spear-shaped tips of its bright green leaves, and its fresh flavour is softer and sweeter than peppermint.

At a glance

  • Botanical name: Mentha spicata
  • Plant family: Mint family (Lamiaceae)
  • Part we use: Leaf
  • Native to: Europe and Asia
  • Character: Fresh, sweet and cooling

History and tradition

Mint has been used since ancient times. The Greeks and Romans used it to flavour food and scent their tables, and the Romans are thought to have helped bring it to Britain.

Medieval monks grew mint in their herb gardens, and by the 16th century it was a common household herb. Mint sauce with roast lamb remains a very British tradition.

Across North Africa and the Middle East, fresh spearmint is the heart of mint tea, a daily ritual of hospitality traditionally served after meals.
