Linden Flower

Botanical illustration of linden (Tilia platyphyllos) with heart-shaped leaves and pale yellow blossom

Linden is the large, graceful tree known in Britain as the lime tree, although it has nothing to do with citrus limes. In early summer, its pale yellow blossoms fill the air with a sweet, honey-like scent.

At a glance

  • Botanical name: Tilia platyphyllos
  • Plant family: Mallow family (Malvaceae)
  • Part we use: Flower and bract
  • Native to: Europe, including Britain
  • Character: Delicate, honeyed and floral

History and tradition

Linden blossom has been one of Europe's favourite evening herbs for centuries. In France, linden tea, known as tilleul, is a classic after-dinner drink.

Linden trees were often planted in village squares and at the heart of communities across Europe, and in Germanic folklore they were associated with gatherings, justice and love.

The species we use, Tilia platyphyllos, is the large-leaved lime, a native of the British Isles.
