  • Plant family: Cabbage family (Brassicaceae)
  • Part we use: Root
  • Native to: The high Andes of Peru
  • Character: Earthy, nutty and malty

History and tradition

Maca has been cultivated in the Andes for thousands of years and was a valued food in Inca times. It was traditionally dried and stored, then cooked, roasted or ground into flour.

In Andean tradition, maca has long been associated with vitality, stamina and fertility, and it was sometimes used as a form of trade and payment.

Today, powdered maca is popular around the world, often added to smoothies and baking for its malty, nutty flavour.
