Rose Petal

Botanical illustration of a pink rose in bloom with a bud, leaves and scattered rose petals

The rose needs little introduction. A symbol of love and the heart across cultures and centuries, its petals have been used in perfumes, cooking and herbal preparations for thousands of years.

At a glance

  • Botanical name: Rosa spp.
  • Plant family: Rose family (Rosaceae)
  • Part we use: Petal
  • Native to: Asia, Europe and the Middle East
  • Character: Soft, floral and gently sweet

History and tradition

Roses have been cultivated for at least 5,000 years. The ancient Persians, Greeks and Romans prized them, and the Romans scattered rose petals at feasts and celebrations.

In the medieval Islamic world, Persian physicians perfected the distillation of rose water, which spread across Europe and remains a key ingredient in Middle Eastern and South Asian cooking.

In English history, the rose is a powerful emblem. The red and white roses of Lancaster and York gave the Wars of the Roses their name, and the Tudor rose became a national symbol.
